EA ENERGY
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of Power Plants are being developed by EA Energy?
The EA Energy power plants in Abaco and Eleuthera are hybrid microgrid energy systems designed to generate reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity in Abaco and Eleuthera Islands.
Each plant integrates three key technologies:
- Solar PV Panels: These systems convert sunlight directly into electricity, providing a clean and renewable energy source.
- Natural Gas Engines: These high-efficiency engines serve as the primary dispatchable power source. Fueled by regasified LNG, ensuring grid stability and offer continuous power supply, especially during periods of low solar generation or high demand.
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): The BESS units store excess solar energy and provide power during peak loads or are utilized for load balancing. They enhance grid flexibility by enabling frequency regulation, voltage support, and seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy.
As microgrids, these plants operate independently or in coordination with the main grid, offering resilience against disruptions and reducing reliance on imported fuels. The hybrid design ensures maximum efficiency and lower emissions tailored to the unique needs of island environments.
What is a Hybrid Power Plant?
A Hybrid Power Plant combines two or more types of energy generation, typically renewable sources like solar or wind with conventional sources such as natural gas and often includes battery storage systems. This setup provides:
- Greater power supply reliability
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions
What is a Microgrid?
A microgrid is a localized energy system that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main power grid. It typically includes:
- Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, wind turbines, and generators
- Energy storage systems
- Control systems to manage energy flow
Microgrids are ideal for remote communities, islands, or critical infrastructure because they can continue operating during grid outages, enhancing resilience and energy security.
What are the environmental benefits of hybrid microgrids?
Hybrid microgrids help reduce environmental impact by:
- Lowering greenhouse gas emissions
- Minimizing air and noise pollution
- Promoting energy efficiency and reducing dependence on fuel imports
The Power Plants in Abaco and Eleuthera, combining solar, battery storage, and natural gas, offer a sustainable and resilient energy solution for the communities of the islands.
What are the components and capacities of the Power Plants?
The Power Plant in Abaco will consist of:
- 30 MWe Natural Gas Engines
- 15 MWp Solar PV Panels
- 15 MWh Battery Energy Storage System
The Power Plant in Eleuthera will consist of:
- 20 MWe Natural Gas Engines
- 10 MWp Solar PV Panels
- 10 MWh Battery Energy Storage System
Both Power Plants will also include Regasification and Storage Facilities capable of processing and storing LNG.
How will the Electricity Generation & Energy Management work?
The three technologies will work in harmony in order to generate electricity, where:
- Natural Gas Generation: Regasified LNG is fed into natural gas engines, providing a stable and substantial share of electricity.
- Solar Power Generation: Solar PV panels harness sunlight to supply power and charge the BESS.
- Battery Energy Storage (BESS): Stores excess solar energy and provides fast-response backup during demand spikes, enhancing grid stability and efficiency.
When does the construction of the Power Plants begin and end?
How will Fuel (LNG) Logistics work?
LNG will be transported via sea to the islands and via road to the Power Plants in ISO containers mounted on chassis, ensuring safe and efficient delivery. The logistics scheme in the islands will include:
- Containers being unloaded at ports and transported by road to the Power Plants,
- LNG being transferred into on-site storage tanks,
- Empty containers being returned to ports for transportation to be refilled.
Is the road and sea transportation of LNG via ISO containers considered a safe practice?
Transporting LNG via ISO containers is a safe and globally accepted practice, provided that it is conducted in accordance with international safety standards and regulations. These containers are:
- Built to international safety standards,
- Designed with pressure relief valves,
- Protected by double-walled insulation,
- Designed to withstand extreme pressure and temperature,
- Routinely inspected and certified.
They support transportation without transferring contents, minimizing risks. Safety is ensured through strict protocols and emergency procedures.
What are the advantages of using natural gas as the primary fuel in a power plant?
Natural gas offers:
- Reliable baseload power when solar or battery sources are insufficient
- Lower emissions than diesel or coal
- Fast ramp-up to balance variable renewable energy
Natural gas provides a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional fuels while supporting the transition to renewables.
How will the Power Plants benefit the communities of Abaco and Eleuthera Islands?
We expect the Power Plants to bring significant benefits to the residents of Abaco and Eleuthera, including:
- Establishing a stable and sustainable electricity supply
- Supporting the development of a skilled local workforce
- Reducing emissions of Greenhouse Gases
How will EA Energy contribute to the environmental sustainability and community development in Abaco and Eleuthera Islands?
